Drastic rise in abandoned pets

Drastic rise in abandoned pets

It maybe a sign of the times, or just that some people will never learn, but there has been a sharp rise of twenty three per cent in the amount of pets being abandoned by their owners according to the animal welfare charity RSPCA.

What make's everything worse about this problem is the excuses that some owners have come up with, in order to see the back of the pet.

"My cat doesn't match my new carpet"

"My dog hurts my leg when she wags her tail."

The chief officer of the RSPCA inspectorate, Tim Wass, said:

"It is an offence to abandon any animal and there is never any excuse for doing so,"

"Last summer we deployed the biggest number of RSPCA staff for a generation to the rescue of farm animals, horses and other much-loved pets from the severe floods that swept the country."

It is amazing really that so many pet owners actually get fed up with their cat, dog or other animal. In fact the figures show that 7,347 animals had been handed over to them in 2007, and of that amount over half were cats. The amount of abandoned animals for 2006 was 5,959, so there is a clear difference, which is a worrying sign as times are getting harder and pets are the first to suffer.
