Police buy flip flops for drunken women

Police buy flip flops for drunken women

We have a saying here in the UK and it is “Nanny State” this has come about because the government sometimes appears to think that we the ordinary people are totally incapable of looking after ourselves and cannot make simple decisions, so they do it for us.

A prime example of this is the police force in the coastal resort of Torquay in Devon, they have started a new scheme for the women who will be going out on the town and this service is flip flops.

Yes, any woman who looks like they have had too much to drink will be offered a complimentary pair of flip flops so that they do not have trot around in those high heeled shoes.

However, this scheme, which could make walking home a lot safer for these women, has its opponents who feel that this is just another waste of taxpayer's money.

Matthew Elliott of the Taxpayers' Alliance said: "This is an idiotic waste of money.

"People don't pay taxes for drunk women to get free flip-flops, they want police to fight crime.

"Police aren't there to be an emergency supply of flat shoes."

Nevertheless, the police feel that they are doing a good service, and they say that the flip flops are also covered in messages about safe alcohol limits.

Supt Chris Singer, Torbay Police Commander, said, "I would be surprised if the cost of the flip-flops was more than £200.

"This is part of a forward-thinking, innovative partnership to make it a safer place to be."

Of course, some would say that this is a sensible idea, but are the police really there to make sure that women who drink too much can get to their next destination without breaking their ankles?
